Gabion is box manufactured from 8 x 10 double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh, as per ASTM A975. Gabions are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects.
PVC coated gabion is applied to provide additional protection for use in polluted, contaminated or aggressive environments: in salt, fresh water, acid soil or wherever the risk of corrosion is present. The wire used in the manufacture of PVC coated gabion is PVC coated heavily galvanized steel. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.50 mm.

Gabion shall be manufactured with an 8 x 10 mesh type having a nominal mesh opening of 83 x 114 mm (3.25 x 4.5 in.). Tolerances on the mesh opening shall not exceed ± 10% on the nominal dimension D values.

Length, width and height of gabion as manufactured shall not differ more than ± 5% from the ordered size prior to filling.

Gabion and mattress shall be manufactured with all components mechanically connected at the production facility with the exception of the mattress lid which is produced separately from the base. All gabion and mattress shall be supplied in the collapsed form, either folded and bundled or rolled, for shipping.
